Synopsis: The skeleton of a person who died two to three years ago is found during an excavation of fossils at Lake Nojiri in Nagano Prefecture but the skull is missing. The investigation proves challenging for the Nagano Prefectural Police’s First Investigation Division and detective Takemura Iwao (Ito Atsushi) who is in charge of the case. Even after two months go by, the skeleton remains unidentified. However, with the advice from the head of criminal investigations, Omori Shuji (Nakamura Baijaku), they determine that the skeleton is that of a university professor Hatano Takahide (Satoi Kenta). He is a leading authority of research on the monk Ryokan who is known for his poetry and calligraphy. Hatano had a huge debt and it also turns out that he took out a hefty life insurance policy. The beneficiary was his beautiful wife Kyoko (Kuriyama Chiaki) who is 25 years his junior. As the investigation progresses, the name Taninaga Kazuko (Ito Kazue), who had been Kyoko’s housekeeper, also comes up. Furthermore, she is being watched by Okabe Kazuo (Miura Takahiro) from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police due to her connection to the suspicious deaths of her husbands who were covered by expensive insurance policies.
