Synopsis: Ishimura Osamu (Yagira Yuya), a student at Kyoto Imperial University, aspires to be a scientist in nuclear physics towards the end of the Pacific War. He has been studying atomic fission in the university lab and continues to conduct experiments to develop a new bomb using nuclear energy on the orders of the navy. Once Osamu gets absorbed in the experiments, he becomes oblivious to his surroundings. His childhood friend Asakura Setsu (Arimura Kasumi) whom he secretly likes, ends up staying at his house with her grandfather (Yamamoto Shinya) after they lose their home which has been demolished to prevent damage from air raids. Osamu’s younger brother Hiroyuki (Miura Haruma), a non-commissioned officer in the army, returns home from the battlefront for a brief visit to recuperate and the trio are delighted to see each other again after a long time. Although Hiroyuki had a horrific experience on the frontline, he does not show it and is cheerful and kind to his family. There is little progress in the experimental development of the bomb and the members of the lab begin to have doubts about the continuation of the research. Just as Hiroyuki sets off for the battlefront again, they receive word that a nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The researchers head to Hiroshima where they see the burnt ruins of the place with their very own eyes.
