Story
One day, Tsukumo Sakura, who runs a secondhand bookstore, visits the lawyer Mitani Momoko. She reports that she has finally found closure 20 years after her son, a high school student, was stabbed by a 17-year-old girl and lost his life. Although Sakura was the mother of the victim and Momoko was the lawyer for the assailant, the two of them overcame these circumstances and built up a relationship of trust. Momoko operates a children’s shelter called Hachidori no Ie. It is a temporary refuge for children who have run away from their parents for some reason or other such as abuse. Momoko asks Sakura to help out at the shelter just for one day today. It is hard to get staff to stay long in their jobs and the kitchen staff quit all of a sudden. Sakura agrees to prepare dinner today and breakfast tomorrow morning. She arrives with Kawabata Tetsuya, a rookie lawyer from Momoko’s office, at Hachidori no Ie, whom only a limited number of people know about in order to ensure the safety of the children. It is an ordinary house located in a residential neighbourhood. Emotionally scarred children who believe all the adults in the world are enemies, live with Nabeshima Shinnosuke, the head of Hachidori no Ie. Wanting to give the children strength, Sakura makes oyakodon (rice topped with chicken and eggs) for dinner to fill their empty stomachs. It is a dish where parent and child come together as one. However, Sakura’s feelings do not get through to the children at the shelter who neither know the joy of eating nor what they want to eat.
