Former salaryman Ozu Hiroshi, habitual thief Hachinohe Gosaburo, swindler Sakai Naotsugu, gang member Araki Kensaku have been locked up in cell 204, a shared cell in a prison. After lunch one day, the four are chatting when Hara Ippei, a man who violated the Swords and Firearms Control Law, arrives as the newcomer. All of them sit in a circle and Ippei gets nervous at the words, “Let’s start as planned.” A quiet battle for side dishes and jams unfolds in cell 204 without being detected by the prison guards. The five of them including Ippei engage in a heated contest to tell appetising food stories, talking about the most delicious food they have eaten outside of prison. The winner is the one with the most number of people taken in by the story and can choose one of the side dishes he likes.
Fukushi Seiji as Hara Ippei
The newcomer to cell 204. He was a rascal in his youth and has a juvenile record with the police. Even after he comes of age, he is arrested on charges of assault. While he is on parole, he is charged with violating the Swords and Firearms Control Law when trafficking at the request of a friend from a former gang of hooligans, and given a prison sentence. He grows to dislike telling stories about food because it is also connected to the incident that got him jailed.
Konno Hiroki as Ozu Hiroshi
A former salaryman who is serving jail time for embezzling company money. It is a small sum even though he took money for his own use. He is very much a man of the lower middle class, and good at talking about his days as a salesman such as stories about the simple meals he remembers preparing while working away from home.
Tokui Yu as Hachinohe Gosaburo
The elder of cell 204 and the mediator. He has 26 previous convictions. Each time he is released from prison, he gets arrested for petty crime such as theft and returns to prison. The prison seems to have already become his home and that is also his wish. He has a heart-rending story of the time when he was poor.
Yanagisawa Shingo as Sakai Naotsugu
A liar like the swindler he is, he loves joking and has a mischievous streak. His stories of food are always lies so everyone is wary. But they hang on his words because he is a good storyteller. His stories about delicious food strike a chord, but how much of it is true, is questionable.
Ozawa Hitoshi as Araki Kensaku
A big and brawny gang member with a bad mouth. He is a simple-minded person and has a short-temper. However, he is has not been able to get far for his age because he is inept. He is honourable and easily moved to tears. He would even cry when he thinks of the food during the hard times as a gang member.
