Synopsis: Takatsuki Isao (Ichimura Masachika) works for a third-rate trading company. He has reached retirement age on this day and is sent off with a token ceremony. When Isao returns home, his excited wife Eiko (Kato Kazuko) is about to leave for a trip with her friends. As he mutters about the monotony of his life, he receives a phone call from an ex-elementary school classmate Sakata Norio (Kadono Takuzo) to invite him to a reunion. Although he had replied that he will not be going the other day, he is flattered by Norio’s remarks that “We cannot start without our leader Isao-chan” and decides to make an appearance. However, when Isao arrives at the small bar which is the venue on the day of the reunion, there are just four people besides him: Norio the organiser, Tamura Minoru (Denden) the joker, Yonekura Shoichi (Kataoka Tsurutaro) the non-entity, and Hanaoka Machiko (Matsuzaka Keiko) the belle of the class. It is a reunion in name only. Norio has gathered the five who were good friends back then for this party. Despite the initial disappointment, nostalgia wells up and they quickly revert to their past relationships. Everyone has something that they do not want the others to know about so no one says much. They put on a great pretense and begin reporting how they are doing to each other. However, Norio’s confession that his days are numbered causes all their lies to gradually become apparent. Even Machiko who had talked about leading a happy life under the same roof as her son and daughter-in-law, is forcibly brought back home by the couple who march into the bar. But this does not end there … … Isao and the rest doze off. When they wake up at dawn, they realise Minoru has died quietly. Everyone sinks into a dark mood and gripe that nothing good will happen to them in the years to come anyway. This negativity gets Isao angry for some reason. He roars at them that the reunion will not end in this gloomy manner. They propose to take Minoru’s dead body to the venue of his granddaughter’s piano recital which Minoru said he would go even if it costs him his life. After that, Isao recover Machiko. This is how they set out on a bizarre driving trip with Minoru’s body.
