In 1921, a young Miyazawa Kenji stormed out of his wealthy family and ran away to Tokyo. In the eight months that he lived in Tokyo as he made a living for himself, his mind never left his beloved younger sister Toshi. One day at the end of summer, he gets an unexpected telegram from his family implying that Toshi is seriously ill. Kenji hurries home to Hanamaki in Iwate Prefecture with great haste to find a seemingly healthy Toshi waiting for him. He realises that he has been thoroughly deceived by this scheme of his father Masajiro, who wants him to take over the family’s pawnshop business. His mother Ichi acts as if nothing has happened. Even though it has been a long time since he last came home, Kenji cannot find something to throw himself into despite his varied interests. But he realises that his ideal way of life is to share happiness after he made the croquette that he had tasted in Tokyo by hand for his family in place of souvenirs. This is communicated through his representative work. In accordance to Toshi’s wish, Kenji takes a position as a teacher at the Hienu (now known as Hanamaki) Agricultural School which has just been established and begins to teach the students these ideals. Miyazawa Kenji’s younger sister. She is a teacher at Hanamaki High School but is on leave of absence because of her weak constitution. She admires Kenji’s talent and respects him. She is the one who understands Kenji the best.
Yamazaki Ikusaburo as Fujiwara Katoji
A music teacher in high school. He is adored by female students and has a talent for writing. He is introduced to Miyazawa Kenji by Toshi who is a fellow teacher and 興味を頂く。Although he gets twisted around by the free-spirited Kenji, he later becomes his good friend.
Ichikawa Mikako as Sakurakoji Yasu
A strong-minded elementary school teacher. She helps out at her family’s soba shop. She is scatterbrained but loves music and contemporary literature, and gradually becomes attracted to Miyazawa Kenji. She is the woman of Kenji’s destiny.
Yanagisawa Shingo as Yoshimori
A farmer in Hanamaki. He gets involved with Miyazawa Kenji after his children bring items to pawn to the Miyazawas. He feels Kenji’s kindness and in turn conveys the harshness of living to him.
