The arrogant Yabe Kenzo who has been unwittingly solving difficult cases thanks to a combination of good luck and mix ups around him, returns with his subordinate Akiba Harando, the computer nerd. Although the submissive Akiba does not shrink back from Yabe’s treatment, something unusual arises in their relationship this time. Yabe finds himself squaring off against his strongest rival to date. Genius scientist Deep Manabu who has invented “God Eye Joe”, artificial intelligence customised for criminal investigations, has been solving successive cases that even the FBI and Scotland Yard have given up on. He announces that he will use it to catch a murderer called the “referee of the dark” whom the Japanese police is helpless against. With no room to maneuver, the police commissioner assigns Yabe to be the full-time investigator in order shift responsibility. Unaware of this, Yabe heads to a hot spring area with eyewitness sightings of the “referee of the dark” in high spirits. There is a landslide and an inn is cut off like a remote island. Then a company president who is a guest at the inn, is murdered. Under Yabe’s supervision, the proprietress of the inn Yamakawa Tamao and her guests split into groups to search the surroundings for clues. The murderer’s personal effects are discovered in the direction of the woods and Yabe gives chase with Akiba. Meanwhile, Deep Manabu has been at work on analysing the case. A fierce battle of wits is about to unfold between the man with the wig and the man who uses artificial intelligence, in the investigation of this bloodthirsty killer.
Namase Katsuhisa as Yabe Kenzo
A detective of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Rank: Assistant Inspector. While he is obsequious to authority, he is unusually harsh on people whom he believes to be beneath him. A genius at shirking work and avoiding dangerous missions as much as possible, he accepts this investigation into the “referee of the dark” because he has a stronger desire for the limelight than others. He is seriously worried about his hair and ends up being overly sensitive to this kind of topics.
Hakamada Yoshihiko as Deep Manabu
A genius scientist who has developed artificial intelligence customised for criminal investigations. He has used it to solve successive cases that even the FBI and Scotland Yard have given up on. Meanwhile, he declares his bid to arrest the murderer called the “referee of the dark” whom the Japanese police are having a hard time with. He is reunited with his rival in junior high school Akiba Harando and they develop a friendship.
Ikeda Tetsuhiro as Akiba Harando
A detective of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He is Yabe Kenzo’s direct subordinate who constantly tags along with him. He is good at investigations which adopt the latest technology because he is a computer nerd but this knowledge and skills are actually practically useless. He is reunited with his classmate Deep Manabu, whom he competed with in a microcomputer contest during junior high school. He respects his technical capabilities.
Uchida Chika as Yamakawa Tamao
The proprietress who runs the inn ‘Katsuratarou’ in the heart of Akaishi Hot Spring. Seeing her late husband in Yabe Kenzo, she takes a romantic interest in him and aggressively goes after him.
Satoi Kenta as Superintendent Kunikida
The Police Commissioner’s aide and Yabe Kenzo’s boss. He is coerced into a showdown with artificial intelligence in the investigation regarding the “referee of the dark” but he focuses on avoiding responsibility. He sends Yabe to the frontline of the investigation after a consultation with the Police Commissioner.
Owada Shinya as Police Commissioner
The head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He is forced into a showdown between the police and artificial intelligence in the investigation surrounding the “referee of the dark”. Although the credibility of the police is at stake, he leaves the investigation to the naturally hopeless detective Yabe Kenzo so that he will not be held responsible when they lose.
