Story
Mizusawa Sakura works for the inquiry counter of the Crime Prevention Section of Komagome Chuo Police Precinct’s Community Safety Division. She is a habitual latecomer. In the morning, she introduces herself as DJ Kokoro on ‘Komagome Morning Cafe’, Komagome’s small FM radio network in Tokyo’s traditional working class neighbourhood. This is her other face. At the same time the morning programme ends, Sakura would rush into the precinct, but she is always slightly late and constantly gets yelled at by the bossy Yabuki Kaoru. Sakura is actually a special investigator under the orders of “Iron Lady” Igarashi Kyoko, the chief of the police precinct, to listen to the voices on the street. Once a case occurs, Sakura will hide her identity and go undercover. One day, Sakura gets invited by Kaoru and reluctantly joins a matchmaking party. However, a male doctor who is one of the participants suddenly dies of a heart attack. Receiving an alert, the hot-blooded Takeuchi Masato and other detectives from Komagome Chuo Police Precinct set out to investigate. They immediately suspect Sometani Shiori, who had been together with the man. In fact, Shiori was suspected of murdering a man with the same method in the past. However, Sakura who had heard Shiori’s voice at the party, has doubts. When Sakura embarks on sleuthing shortly after that, she realises that the case is related to a big hospital where politicians and even the police top brass are hospitalised. With Kyoko’s permission, Sakura becomes an assistant nurse and begins an undercover investigation at the hospital.
Characters
Nakama Yukie as Mizusawa Sakura
She lived around the world since early childhood because of her parents’ work. While hearing men and women of all ages, nationalities, cultures and languages, she developed a unique listening ability and an outstanding memory. She studied psychology at a graduate school in the US and had been an outstanding counsellor. However, she caught the attention of Igarashi Kyoko who came to the US for training and became a late blooming police officer. Although she belongs to the Community Safety Division, she is ordered on special investigations by the police chief of the precinct and puts her listening skills to good use. She is also DJ Kokoro at a community radio station to listen to the voices on the street. Despite her excellent ability to read people, she is nonchalant and obtuse about herself.
Sato Ryuta as Takeuchi Masato
Although he worked at Nishi Tokyo Police Precinct for a long time, he took up a post at Komagome Chuo Police Precinct. The death of his parents in an incident when he was a child fuelled his aspiration to be a police officer because he did not want any child to be put in the same position as he was. He also started learning judo out of a desire to become a strong officer who is able to protect everyone. He has been the reigning judo champion of the police nationwide for five consecutive years. He is the impulsive sort who will immediately spring into action once something comes to mind, and has been repeatedly warned by Mizusawa Sakura for frequently dashing off without letting a person finish his story.
Takashima Reiko as Igarashi Kyoko
She and Mizusawa Sakura became acquainted when she was sent to the New York City Police by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department for training, and values Sakura’s listening skills. She has worked with the conviction that crime prevention is linked to listening to the voices all over town, but she took responsibility for a subordinate’s mistake in the initial investigation of a case and was demoted to be the chief of Komagome Chuo Police Precinct. However, her conviction has not changed. She wants to propose a new investigation method based on Sakura’s listening skills as a test case to the top brass. This is limited to special investigations right now because she has many enemies within the male-dominated police organisation. She is the only person who understands Sakura.
Kusabue Mitsuko as Mizusawa Ume
Mizusawa Sakura’s outgoing grandmother. The well-known proprietress of a small restaurant at a corner of a traditional shopping street in Komagome. Regulars from the neighbourhood always gather at her restaurant which has become the perfect place for idle gossip, and she is constantly at the centre of this. The conversations between regulars at the restaurant are often useful in Sakura’s investigations. In fact, she was once a policewoman and gives Sakura appropriate advice when she puzzles over cases.
