Story
Kamiya Genjiro, an officer of Kitamachi Magistrate’s Office who patrols the streets of Edo, has a reputation within the magistrate’s office of being an entirely dissolute man who frequents the restaurant, Yoshino. But he probes and solves cases by himself with exceptional powers of deduction and at all hours so his colleagues would consult him first and even his superiors who call him “good-for-nothing” would depend on him when it comes to complicated cases. There is something that Genjiro has inwardly decided on. It is to arrest the criminal who killed his mother and younger sister 14 years ago and settle this case. At that time, the magistrate’s office had investigated in order to capture the criminal. However, the investigation was suspended due to pressure from the top. Even so, Genjiro has not been able to let it go. He supposes that a rather important person is connected to the truth of the case and sets out to shed light on the incident. Meanwhile, the daughter of the owner of the candle shop Kikuya has been kidnapped. Five days ago, a sword-wielding wandering samurai was arrested at the shopfront. But he was let off because he is the older brother of the owner’s wife. Genjiro investigates Kikuya’s internal affairs as he spends all his time at Yoshino and becomes suspicious when Kikuya’s nanny, Osugi, is not able to give a statement.

Takahashi Mitsuomi as Kamiya Genjiro
An officer of Kitamachi Magistrate’s Office. Although he is acknowledged to be the laziest person in the magistrate’s office, he solves difficult problems with his perceptiveness once a case occurs. He is a talented swordsman in the Jikishinin school of swordsmanship. 14 years ago, his mother and younger sister were murdered by someone, and he has been pursuing the truth.
Nakagoshi Noriko as Otsuyo
The proprietress of Yoshino, a small restaurant. She and Kamiya Genjiro are in love. She has been living with her son after her husband went missing three years ago.
Yamazaki Shigenori as Torikai Michinosuke
An officer of Kitamachi Magistrate’s Office. Kamiya Genjiro’s peer. He is timid but has a quick temper. He would often get Genjiro’s help for troublesome arrests.
Hasegawa Tomoharu as Naokichi
Kamiya Genjiro’s informant. Although he is a loyal and reliable subordinate, he makes blunders sometimes.
Ono Takehiko as Kaneko Idayu
An administrator of Kitamachi Magistrate’s Office. Kamiya Genjiro’s naggy superior. He knows Genjiro’s father well.
Kishimoto Kayoko as Osaku
A maid who has served the Kamiya family for generations. She is a meddlesome persona and always scolds the dissipated Genjiro harshly. Although Genjiro is awkward in her presence, she knows about his tragic past and is one of the few people who understand him.
Nakamura Baijaku as Ginzo
Kamiya Genjiro’s assistant. Because their relationship has been since Genjiro’s father’s generation, he and Genjiro have faith in each other. While he is a loyal subordinate, he also watches over and helps Genjiro like a father would.
