Synopsis: On 4 April 1928, Oishi Hisako (Matsushita Nao) who has just graduated from a teaching college, takes up a teaching post at the branch school on Shodoshima in the Seto Inland Sea. Riding on a bicycle to work dressed in Western style, she is eyed curiously and critically by the villagers. Waiting for her at the school are 12 children who will be elementary school students as of today. Five boys and seven girls. To these 12, the young, cheerful Hisako appears dazzling and lovely despite it being her first teaching position. They also gradually get attached to her. Although the adults resent her Western fashion, the children are always her allies, and give her moral support. One day during the second term, Hisako injures her leg and is forced recuperate at her family home (Yoshiyuki Kazuko). The children show up to pay her a visit. The 12 of them had walked a distance of 8 km despite hunger and fatigue. A happy Hisako has a photograph taken with them for keepsake. For many of the children, it is their first time … … Even though Hisako’s injury heals after that, she is not able to commute to the distant branch school and transfers to the main school. She parts with the children. In April 1932, the children who are now fifth-grade students start going to the main school. Hisako and the children are happy to be able to learn together. However, at the time, there are teachers in the school rounded up for instilling anti-war sentiments in students.
